Your bed feels like the new frontier in tech and if it all works as advertised, you’ll sleep through it. Among the most ambitious forays into the bedroom is one from a Chinese company called DeRucci which is using artificial intelligence like a guardian angel that watches over you while you slumber. The company’s T11 Smart Mattress uses 23 AI sensors to automatically track shifts in position, body temperature, heart rate and health. Eighteen flexible support air bags instantly respond to a sleeper’s movements and position. A patented algorithm takes into account data like height and body shape and makes real-time adjustments as required so the mattress can ensure proper spinal alignment. for example. For couples, each side of the bed can be programmed independently for things like temperature and there’s a dedicated foot warmer as well. The smart mattress also will address snoring by raising or lowering the mattress to reduce it. The smart mattress also monitors your sleep for potential health issues. You can even have a ChatGPT-style conversation with it to discuss sleeping tips. The price for a better night’s sleep is steep, however, at $8,250. www.derucci.com
I’m very bad at making the bed in the morning so when I saw a duvet that makes the bed on its own on command from an app, it was like a dream come true. How does it work? Basically, it is like blowing up an air mattress. There’s an inflatable layer that forces the duvet to return to its original shape. The cover and the top sheet are connecte so they follow along. An app controls the bedmaking and you can program it to operate at specific times. (My early-rising Dad would have used it to make the bed with me in it.) There also is a temperature control so that each side of the bed can programmed separately. Alas, the Smart Duvet may remain an aspiration for now at $1,555. I may have to content myself with heated blankets like those from Eddie Bauer$160) which warm up via voice commands. BeautyRest’s Smart Blanket ($287) has 20 different heat settings and a 10-hour automatic safety shut off. But there’s no doubt that smart tech is upgrading dumb mattresses. And if there is one truism in tech it’s that expensive products becomes more affordable over time.
